Description:
Although Kollwitz is best known for her anguished portrayals of mothers with children, the tragedy of war, and death, this work represents a lesser-known aspect of the artist’s life and inspiration. In her writing, Kollwitz acknowledges that her socialist “politicization” was derived from her faith; and this poignant image, of a girl engrossed in fervent prayer, also demonstrates the way Kollwitz used hands and faces to express intense emotion.
